Happy Juneteenth
Like most kids raised in the American education system, I I believed that the Emancipation Proclamation put an end to slavery once and for all. I didn’t know about Juneteenth till very recently. Or how slavery persisted in remote parts of the country well into the civil rights era. Juneteenth isn’t a commemoration of a long-ago era, but rather, our shared, current history. The fact that it received official recognition in our lifetime — that just makes it that much more salient.
Unlike most federal holidays that are simply acknowledged as days off from school or work, my kids actually asked about Juneteenth this year. This is big, coming from teens who think they know everything. National holidays matter. They remind us of what’s important in our shared culture.
